About The Detour Diaries

Welcome to The Detour Diaries! This site compiles advice, tips, tricks, and honest reviews from everywhere I’ve travelled. I’m the kind of person who deep-dives into research before setting foot anywhere. Hours of forums, articles, maps, and rabbit holes — all before I’ve even packed a bag, and definitely all before a normal person has even thought about their flights.

From top tourist destinations like Madrid, Tanzania, and Mexico City to more overlooked corners of the world like Iraq or Hargeisa, the goal is simple: to make sure all that research — and everything I actually experienced — doesn’t go to waste. Hopefully it saves you some time, some money, and a few bad meals.

These reviews are unsponsored and unfiltered. No brand deals, no courtesy passes, no softening the blow. If somewhere was overpriced, overhyped, or just plain disappointing, I’ll say so. And if it genuinely blew me away, I’ll say that too — but I’ll tell you exactly why, not just that it was “amazing.”

I’m Rachel

Before I visit anywhere, I do a ridiculous amount of research — and most travel content I have found fails me. So I started writing my own. The Detour Diaries is unsponsored, unfiltered, and unapologetically honest. From top destinations like Rome to “off-the-beaten-track” spots like Hargeisa, consider this the review site I always wished existed.
